Camping in Dunbar

A weekend camping trip to Dunbar before the weather gets too cold...

2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_001.jpg It was chucking down as we left Edinburgh, but on arrival at the campsite we were treated to a splendid rainbow.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_003.jpg Dinner in the tent - it was a bit blowy out.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_004.jpg Our wee corner of the campsite.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_006.jpg It was lovely and peaceful at sunset.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_008.jpg On Saturday morning we headed to the nature reserve at St Abbs.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_009.jpg We met up with my Uncle and Aunt, who were just passing through on their way south.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_010.jpg We had beautiful sunshine, but it was pretty windy too.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_011.jpg My boy and I.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_014.jpg Foghorn! One of the reasons my Uncle wanted to visit was to see the Foghorn, which was made by his Grandfather's company Steven and Struthers (my Great Grandfather) and is mentioned in wartime letters he's been reading recently.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_015.jpg The view from the foghorn - you wouldn't want to run into these rocks!
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_016.jpg The foghorn is right on the end of the point, and can rotate through 180 degrees to point up or down the coast, although it is now rusted in place pointing straight out to see.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_017.jpg The light is well below the top of the cliff, but still nearly 70m above the water.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_020.jpg The views are great today - I imagine it's pretty exposed here in winter.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_021.jpg The Mire Loch. It doesn't look too boggy to me, but we didn't get too close.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_022.jpg The curving layers in the rocky cliffs up the coast are spectacular.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_024.jpg After lunch we explored the harbour in St Abbs, where I used to board diving boats a lot. Not recently.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_026.jpg The second Lighthouse of the day, this one a more traditional structure at Barns Ness.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_028.jpg Blue sky and puffy clouds hide just how windy it was!
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_030.jpg It almost looks like the light tower is puffing out smoke!
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_033.jpg A trip to the beach on the way back to camp.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_034.jpg Sitting in the dunes out of the wind, it felt positively mediterranean.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_035.jpg Back at our camp for the evening.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_038.jpg Sunday we headed out to John Muir Park for a bike ride and a picnic lunch.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_039.jpg The beach beside the car park was rammed, but a few minutes cycle away we had the place to ourselves.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_040.jpg It was breezy today, and mostly clear but with some big clouds looking spectacular.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_043.jpg 2nd World War anti-tank defences on the coastline.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_044.jpg Rest stop.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_046.jpg More anti-tank defences.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_047.jpg This was a smooth part of the trail (hence I could get my camera out while I pedalled) but Arran did really well on some steep, narrow and sandy sections - tricky stuff!
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_048.jpg A cheeky wee selfie at another rest stop in the woodland on the way back.
2020-09-04 Dunbar Camping_049.jpg Arran was delighted to find a Ladybird as we returned to the car park, and demanded I capture it for posterity. We headed home from here, after a lovely weekend.
