Diving in Kinlochbervie

A great week away, although once again the weather was less than ideal so we got four days diving rather than six, and were pretty restricted in our choice of sites...

2011-09-18_Kinlochbervie_0001.jpg The top of the first pinnacle we dived - very clear water and kelp down past 20m.
2011-09-18_Kinlochbervie_0002.jpg There was a rolling long-wavelength swell that made macro photography pretty tricky, but Alison had her macro lense on and showed great determination.
2011-09-18_Kinlochbervie_0006.jpg Big visibnility, big swell, and big kelp.
2011-09-18_Kinlochbervie_0009.jpg Alison's improvised camera rig dangles a little on safety stops.
2011-09-18_Kinlochbervie_0011.jpg Huge numbers of pollack.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0003.jpg Bubbling away.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0009.jpg A butterfish and a prawn share a crack in the rock.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0013.jpg A big seven armed starfish.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0014.jpg A lovely dive over a sandy bottom at 21m - with great vis and lots of light.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0016.jpg Millions of sand eels - visible against the kelpy patch but invisible over sand.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0017.jpg Looking up.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0020.jpg We had a very pleasant dive around these rocks.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0021.jpg Not many people out on the beach this grey day.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0024.jpg The kelp is all dying off for the winter.
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0027.jpg This seven armed starfish is not lucky - it seems to have lost two arms recently. Fortunately they are growing back...
2011-09-19_Kinlochbervie_0030.jpg I have no idea what this is - a jelly tube with bits in floating in the water column.

2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0006.jpg A variety of encrusting sponges and algae.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0008.jpg Dead Mans Finger.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0009.jpg A very small cod - note the distinctive barbel on its chin.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0011.jpg High rise living - painted top shells on a kelp stem.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0013.jpg A little sea scorpion, very well camoflaged.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0014.jpg The hold-fast for a rather large kelp. It looks like a root, but isn't.
2011-09-20_Kinlochbervie_0027.jpg The dying kelp us home to a lot of sea squirts and other life.

2011-09-21_Camas_0003.jpg The pigs seem to like Kevin...
2011-09-21_Camas_0004.jpg ...much to his delight.
2011-09-21_Camas_0009.jpg Variable weather...
2011-09-21_Camas_0010.jpg Rain shower coming to get us...
2011-09-21_Camas_0011.jpg Just got this one snap of the house before the rain came pelting down and forced me to put my camera away.

2011-09-21_Camas_0012.jpg The departing shower causes a very pretty double rainbow.
2011-09-22_Kinlochbervie_0000.jpg Alison and Kev posing nicely.
2011-09-22_Kinlochbervie_0001.jpg It's a bit rough for diving today, but we went out to give the boat a run.
2011-09-22_Kinlochbervie_0002.jpg This is the house we were staying in.

2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0000.jpg The last day of the trip, and conditions are good enough to get in the water again - hence Alison is kitting up to dive with me.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0001.jpg Another compass jellyfish - I haven't seen them anywhere else.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0003.jpg A random bit of rock. Sea loch anemones, featherstars, algae - so much life.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0004.jpg I love leopard spotted gobies, and there's a juvenile cod swimming past too.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0007.jpg Sea Loch Anemone.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0009.jpg More sea loch anemones.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0012.jpg Sea squirts, sea loch anemones, and an urchin.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0013.jpg More encrusting life.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0014.jpg Sea Squirt.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0016.jpg Looking up at a pontoon used by fishermen - the holding boxes dangling beneath it contain live shellfish waiting for market.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0017.jpg Colonised kelp.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0019.jpg Featherstars.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0020.jpg Hundreds of tiny fish in the shallows.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0021.jpg The boat coming to pick us up.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0022.jpg Kev and Brian, ready to retrieve divers. We've surfaced in a nice calm corner.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0023.jpg Edible crabs.

2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0032.jpg Sunstar.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0033.jpg Mussels growing on the shallower parts of the anchor chain.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0034.jpg Alison on her safety stop, with the mussel-encrusted chain.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0035.jpg Alison taking a picture of the buoy from underneath.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0036.jpg My picture of the buoy from underneath.
2011-09-23_Kinlochbervie_0037.jpg The buoy from the surface. It was pitching pretty wildly in the gales, but is pretty stable today.
2011-09-24_Kinlochbervie_0000.jpg Driving home, the weather hasn't really improved.
2011-09-24_Kinlochbervie_0001.jpg Sunshine starts to appear through the clouds as I head towards the east coast...
