Photos from another work trip to Kharkov, Ukraine, October 2007
Regional airport in Kiev. 4 different advertised times for our flight, it left at none of them.
"Hankey Bannister" whisky advert. Basically, they just take two English sounding words and then name a (Scottish) product with them...
Russian billiards. Nearly all of the balls are white, and you can hit any ball and pot any ball... Sounds easy?
Not easy. Note how the pockets are only a fraction wider than the balls, and the balls will bounce out unless at exactly the right angle.
The view from the cue.
A conventional pool ball on a pool table for comparison!
Volga taxi.
"Supermarket" at Hartron.
The main Hartron building, formerly a part of the Soviet space program.
Lada 4x4. Hot stuff.
Park where you like...
Appropriately space-aged Hartron logo.
Building work. These vehicles would be in a museum in the UK.
Security at Hartron.
Originally workers pulled their own peg on this board at the security booth to release their key/pass the supervisor.
Autumn and some nice appartments.
Rather fancy key for our appartment.
My accomodation. Lovely colour choice I think.
The airport in Kharkov. Rather splendid!
Murals depicting Russian history inside the airport building.
Now rather incongruous over a modern coffee shop (new in the last year).
Our flight back to Kiev - an
Antonov AN24
. This one had a very bald tyre (mostly canvass/metal) on my side and I have no reason to believe the other was any better. They went out of production in 1978, and I have no reason to believe this was a recent model. Still, at least this time I had a seatbelt buckle (last time I had to tie it...)
