New York

Ruth and I went to New York to celebrate her birthday. The mission? See a couple of broadway musicals and hit the tourist trail... Mission accomplished.

2011-09-01_New_York_0000.jpg We stayed in the Andaz Hotel on Wall Street, which had these rather cool room number signs that projected the number on the wall.
2011-09-01_New_York_0001.jpg New York Harbour Taxi.
2011-09-01_New_York_0002.jpg Pier 17 - near our hotel so we went to find some dinner.

2011-09-01_New_York_0004.jpg We started our first full day with a trip out to Liberty and Ellis Islands.

2011-09-01_New_York_0011.jpg We went up to the top of the stone pedestal, which has great views out across the harbour, but more limited views of the statue!
2011-09-01_New_York_0014.jpg Ruth with the Manhattan skyline behind her.
2011-09-01_New_York_0015.jpg Ruth and I.
2011-09-01_New_York_0016.jpg Slightly better view of the statue from here.
2011-09-01_New_York_0020.jpg Fact: Ruth is much smaller than the Statue of Liberty.
2011-09-01_New_York_0022.jpg Ruth and I again, complete with our lovely audio tour headsets...
2011-09-01_New_York_0030.jpg I promise this is the last photo of the statue...
2011-09-01_New_York_0034.jpg The entrance to Ellis Island Immigration Station. New arrivals to the USA landed in the docks on Manhattan then were put on ferries and brought here for clearing. Of course, First Class passengers were not subjected to this. Welcome to the classless society!
2011-09-01_New_York_0033.jpg The main hall at Ellis Island Immigration Station, where immigrants discovered if they were to be admitted, held for further enquiries, or sent home.
2011-09-01_New_York_0038.jpg A huge poster for one of the shows we saw - Daniel Radcliffe starring in "How to succeed in business without really trying". Very enjoyable.
2011-09-01_New_York_0039.jpg The other show we saw was "Catch Me If You Can" - also excellent.
2011-09-01_New_York_0040.jpg Times Square by night.
2011-09-01_New_York_0043.jpg We awoke this morning to find a TV creq shooting outside our hotel window.

2011-09-01_New_York_0059.jpg This building has a ripply surface - I love it.
2011-09-01_New_York_0060.jpg Construction going on in the streets - I wonder if they are hoping trams will eventually materialise?
2011-09-01_New_York_0061.jpg The external fire escapes are very alien to me Scottish eyes.
